Newcastle E-Alert
DATE: September 13, 2011
TO: Community E-Alert Recipients
FROM: Chief Melinda Irvine
SUBJECT: E-Alert # 11-04 – Burglaries
Published with permission of Aleta Phillips, City of Newcastle
While we are happy that we have charged suspects in two of the burglaries that occurred earlier this summer in Olympus, we are continuing to see a higher rate of burglaries throughout Newcastle.
It appears in Newcastle, as in the surrounding jurisdictions, that there are multiple burglary groups breaking into homes on the eastside. In the last two-weeks, we have had three burglaries in the Hazelwood neighborhood with another resident reporting an attempt. Most often, the entry or attempt is made to a back window. The suspects are cutting screens and prying back windows.
If you have any information that may assist in these investigations, please call the Newcastle Police at (425) 649-4444, ext. 120. You may also submit anonymous tips through the city web page at http://www.ci.newcastle.wa.us/police/anonymous_tip.htm.
This is a good reminder to take precautions to prevent a burglary of your home. Some items we recommend include:
· Lock your doors, windows and garage door even when you are home
· Place rods in your sliding windows to prevent the windows from sliding open
· Keep the perimeter of your house well lit and shrubs trimmed back around windows and doors
· Use timers on lights and radios to make your home appear occupied when you are away
· Stop your mail or have a trusted neighbor or friend pick it up when you are away
· Consider using an alarm system
· Take advantage of the Newcastle Police Vacation House Check program. Forms may be submitted through the city web site, www.ci.newcastle.wa.us, or at City Hall. The forms are available outside City Hall 24 hours a day, seven days a week with a night drop box to submit them.
We also encourage you to work with your neighbors to prevent crimes in your area. If you would like more information about a Block Watch program, please contact Officer Ryan Olmsted, Ryan.Olmsted@kingcounty.gov.
If at any time you observe any criminal or suspicious activity, do not hesitate to call 911 or the non-emergency dispatch number, 206-296-3311. We would rather find out a suspicious car is actually a delivery vehicle than take a burglary report from one of your neighbors later.
